Final cleaning takes place daily over the next three or four days. Oil should be placed only on well cleaned and dry metal surfaces immediately after cleaning so that moisture is not allowed to form on the metal. The rounds have varying construction depending upon their purpose. The weight of the bullets and their muzzle velocity are selected so that firing with the different bullets can be conducted with the same sight settings. Ammunition is divided into service and auxiliary types.Tracer bullets can ignite straw roofs, dry grass, etc. The path of the bullet is indicated by a red flame. The flame can be seen for a distance of 700 meters.Incendiary cartridges also contain a tracer element. The path of the bullet is indicated by a red flame which can be seen day or night. On the body or the cartridge case there are longitudinal grooves, and on the cartridge case mouth there are marks from the clamping device. The primer is pierced. There is no propellant in the cartridge case. There is no bullet in the blank cartridges. The mouth is sealed by a star (rosette) crimp. It is dangerous to stand closer than 10 meters away from the muzzle face when blank cartridges are being fired. By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. For other uses, see AK-47 (disambiguation). For the AK family, see Kalashnikov rifle. In 1946, the AK-47 was presented for official military trials, and in 1948, the fixed-stock version was introduced into active service with selected units of the Soviet Army. These are very difficult questions. Each designer seems to have his own paths, his own successes and failures. But one thing is clear: before attempting to create something new, it is vital to have a good appreciation of everything that already exists in this field. At first, Kalashnikov was reluctant, given that their rifle had already fared better than its competitors. Eventually, however, Zaitsev managed to persuade Kalashnikov. It used a long-stroke gas piston above the barrel. The upper and lower receivers were combined into a single receiver.

And, the bolt-handle was simply attached to the bolt-carrier. This simplified the design and production of the rifle. The first production models had stamped sheet metal receivers with a milled trunnion and butt stock insert, and a stamped body.It went into production in 1951 and production ended in 1957.The most ubiquitous example of the milled-receiver AK. The milled lightening cut on the sides is slanted to the barrel axis.It went into production in 1959. Overall, the most-used design in the construction of the AK-series rifles. This model is the most commonly encountered, having been produced in much greater quantities. The differences between the milled and stamped receivers includes the use of rivets rather than welds on the stamped receiver, as well as the placement of a small dimple above the magazine well for stabilization of the magazine. In semi-automatic, the firearm fires only once, requiring the trigger to be released and depressed again for the next shot. In fully automatic, the rifle continues to fire automatically cycling fresh rounds into the chamber until the magazine is exhausted or pressure is released from the trigger. After ignition of the cartridge primer and propellant, rapidly expanding propellant gases are diverted into the gas cylinder above the barrel through a vent near the muzzle. The moving assembly has about 5.5 mm (0.2 in) of free travel, which creates a delay between the initial recoil impulse of the piston and the bolt unlocking sequence, allowing gas pressures to drop to a safe level before the seal between the chamber and the bolt is broken. The AK-47 does not have a gas valve; excess gases are ventilated through a series of radial ports in the gas cylinder. The gas block contains a gas channel that is installed at a slanted angle in relation to the bore axis. The muzzle is threaded for the installation of various muzzle devices such as a muzzle brake or a blank-firing adaptor.

Gas relief ports that alleviate gas pressure are placed horizontally in a row on the gas cylinder.Horizontal adjustment requires a special drift tool and is done by the armory before issue or if the need arises by an armorer after issue. The sight line elements are approximately 48.5 mm (1.9 in ) over the bore axis. Soldiers are instructed to fire at any target within this range by simply placing the sights on the center of mass (the belt buckle, according to Russian and former Soviet doctrine) of the enemy target. Any errors in range estimation are tactically irrelevant, as a well-aimed shot will hit the torso of the enemy soldier. All 100 series AKs use plastic furniture with side-folding stocks. There are also 10, 20, and 40-round box magazines, as well as 75-round drum magazines. As a replacement steel-reinforced 30-round plastic 7.62?39mm box magazines were introduced. The third generation steel-reinforced 30-round 7.62?39mm magazine is similar to the second generation, but is darker colored and has a matte nonreflective surface finish. It also allows for best comparison of the three most common 7.62?39mm AK magazines. However, the 100 series side folding stocks cannot be folded with the optics mounted. Some parts of the AK-47 line are riveted together.Barrel and chamber are chrome plated to resist corrosion. A slanted muzzle device was added to counter climb in automatic fire. This is the most ubiquitous variant of the AK-47.The variants—RPKS, RPKN (RPKSN), RPKL (RPKSL)—mirror AKM variants. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. In the West, one fires a group of shots into the target and then simply measures the overall diameter of the group. The Russians, on the other hand, fire a group of shots into the target. They then draw two circles on the target, one for the maximum vertical dispersion of hits and one for the maximum horizontal dispersion of hits.

They then disregard the hits on the outer part of the target and only count half of the hits (50% or R 50 ) on the inner part of the circles. This dramatically reduces the overall diameter of the groups. They then use both the vertical and horizontal measurements of the reduced groups to measure accuracy. This circular error probable method used by the Russians and other European militaries cannot be converted and is not comparable to US military methods for determining rifle accuracy. When the R 50 results are doubled the hit probability increases to 93.7%.The stocks are missing on the top three AKs And this accounts for the popularity of the (AK 47) weapon. Plus I think that in the United States it's considered counterculture, which is always something that citizens in this country kind of like.During this time the Western countries used relatively expensive automatic rifles, such as the FN FAL, the HK G3, the M14, and the M16. In contrast, the Russians and Chinese used the AK-47; its low production cost and ease of manufacture allow them to make AKs in vast numbers. This city is in the Ural Region of Russia. The museum chronicles the biography of General Kalashnikov and documents the invention of the AK-47. Google Earth view of the Kalashnikov Museum For example, Western works of fiction (movies, television, novels, video games) often portray criminals, gang members, insurgents, and terrorists using AK-47s as the weapon of choice. Conversely, throughout the developing world, the AK-47 can be positively attributed with revolutionaries against foreign occupation, imperialism, or colonialism. It is one of the weapons of choice of Mexican drug cartels. The Type 1 features a stamped receiver while the Type 2 receiver is milled.Stackpole Books. p. 112. Its name is derived from the word 'automatic' (A), the inventor's last initial (K), and the year of its invention (47). The AK-47 was designed to be easy to operate, able to fire in any clime, durable, and mass produced quickly and cheaply. It was adopted into USSR military service in 1949 and quickly became a symbol of Soviet reach around the world.

It has a muzzle velocity of about 700 meters per second, can fire 600-rounds-per-minute at the cyclic rate, and hold a 30-round magazine of 7.62mm ammunition. The biggest issue with the weapon is accuracy, which is the result of large internal parts and powerful caliber rounds that reduce the max effective range to roughly 400m. Despite this weakness, the AK-47 has successfully infected many countries and facilitated the proliferation of communism and terror around the world. Let's learn more about this prominent tool of destruction: This action ignites the bullet primer which, in turn, ignites the gunpowder to fire the bullet. The gas that propels the bullet forward also pushes back on the bolt carrier assembly, ejecting the empty casing. This action also resets the hammer into firing position. The bolt pulls a new round up from the magazine and inserts it into the barrel. The sear keeps the bolt hammer in place until the bolt carrier returns into position. There are, however, 20 countries that still do, including China. According to the AK-47's Operators Manual, the weapon system's country of origin can be identified by markings on the weapon itself. In addition to the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, North Korea, Hungary, and Yugoslavia have manufactured the AK-47. The selector markings on the right side of the receiver provide a ready means of identifying the country of origin In Russia, children are trained to disassemble and reassemble weapons in a similar fashion. They may not have enough funding to feed or house their own people, but they will spare no expense at preparing for a Western invasion. Take your training seriously because the Russians definitely are. One of these is the 922r laws. The short version is this:. It is also known as a Kalashnikov, an AK or in Russian slang, Kalash.Design work on the AK-47 began in the last year of World War II (1945). After thewar in 1946, the AK-46 was presented for official military trials. In 1947 the fixed-stock version was introduced into active service with selected units of the SovietArmy. It has been manufactured inmany countries and has seen service with armed forces as well as irregularforces worldwide. It is inexpensive tomanufacture and easy to clean and maintain. The large gas piston, generous clearances between moving parts, and tapered cartridge case designallow the gun to endure large amounts of foreign matter and fouling withoutfailing to cycle. The bore and chamber, as well as the gas piston and the interior of the gas cylinder, are generally chromium-plated. This plating dramatically increases the life of these parts by resisting corrosion and wear.

This is particularly important, as most military-production ammunition (and virtually all ammunition produced by the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact nations) during the 20th century contained potassium chlorate in the primers. On firing, this was converted to corrosive and hygroscopic potassium chloride which mandated frequent and thorough cleaning in order to prevent damage. Also, simplemeans that it can produced cheaply. That is why you see the AK-variant rifles in the hands of somany armies around the world (even in 3rd world countries!) because you can create an AK-variant rifle out of virtually ANYTHING!Soldiers or freedom fighters, or whomever, all over the world have been making AK-variantrifles with their commonly available tools. Barrel and chamber are chrome plated to resist corrosion. A slanted muzzle device was added to counter climb in automatic fire. This is the most ubiquitous variant of the AK-47. From Wikipedia: “The 1989 Semi-Automatic Rifle Import Ban (18 USC 925(d)(3)) and the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban specifically banned the AK-47 by name. Many other such weapons (including obvious clones of AK-47's) manufactured after 1994 had to be modified (e.g. removal of barrel threading, bayonet lug and folding stock). This ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision. The import of rifles with certain features are still banned. However, certain states such as California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts have specific restrictions with some mentioning AK-pattern firearms by name. Private ownership of AK-47 rifles was regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934. The Gun Control Act of 1968 ceased the import of foreign- manufactured fully automatic firearms for civilian sales and possession. The ATF enforced a provision banning importation of small arms from Communist Bloc nations without a trade agreement with the United States.

This ban is still enforced with the former Soviet Union republics and post-Communist Eastern European nations without USA trade agreements. See the image belowNow, that’s just an exploded view. Many times the guide rails, on the insideof the receiver will not be installed either, theywill just be included with the blank, pre-bentreceiver and you will have to install them as partof the 20% of work you need to do to finish thereceiver. In the image here, you can see that therails are included. Also, you can't really see itunless you look closely, but the magazine well, and the trigger hole and the pistol grip hole arealready there. The flat receiver takes the most work to finishNOTE: the simplest and most cost-effective way for the DIY Patriot is the 80% receiver in myopinion, so that’s what this guide focuses on.Where to get an 80% ReceiverYou can simply Google “80% AK-47 Receiver for sale” but there are some sites that havealways been recommended by gun builders online. Here's some resources for you:I got my 80% receiver from here: (it is called a Polish AKM receiverblank) it came with the 80% work done. The black-oxidefinish of the screws blend into the rifle better than standard rivets for a cleaner look. ? Alloy Steel Screws with a Black-Oxide Finish. Also the barrel pin hole is not drilled all the way through. That's the reartrunnion which still has at least one rivet piece installed that I'll have to drill out and removebefore I can continue to assemble it. Rear trunnion showing the remnants of the rivet used to hold it there.Looking at my receiver, it looks like it's 80% done, so that's good news. As you can see thetrigger hole and the magazine hole and the pistol grip hole are already cut out for us. You may have to demill more of your pieces. Now these holes are all going to take a10-32 thread -- for your screws to hold it together (from your screw kit).

Here it is done:Step 5: Drilling the receiver holes using the templateNow, you're just going to follow the template and drill the holes to the appropriate size as shownon the template (just use those as a guide). Because later I can widen that hole no problemwith a hand reamer -- it's just sheet metal, so no problem.Let's start drilling. Remember to step-drill. There are six of them. Make sure to wear eyeprotection when you're using the dremel or any other tool like this that is flinging hot bits ofmetal everywhere! Then just keep test fitting after each go around with the dremel to see if it moves freely. You need to heat treatthe hammer pin hole and the trigger hole. To do this you need a quenching liquid. And then quench in the water:Do that will both sides hammer and trigger hole. Then wait a little for it to cool off, and scrapeoff the extra carbon buildup as best you can forSTEP 2: ANNEALING THE STEELWhere you bring it back up to just a blue gray color and then do NOT quench in the water, justsimply let it air cool. It would be SMARTER to take it and clean it as bestyou can after the first heating and quenching so that you can better see if the steel is turningcolors. When you're done the receiver is going to be all kinds of colors and have black carbon on it, etcfrom the heating. That's not necessary. Many of these field manuals have been approved by the U.S. armed forces and have even been used by actual military personnel.
