DDM03 September 2004. The Third Edition, DDM03, of the SDI Diaphragm Design Manual continues the evolution of building shear resistance presented in the First and Second Editions of this manual. The manual is based on research, testing, and analysis sponsored by the Steel Deck Institute and its member and associate member companies, under the direction of Dr. Larry D. Luttrell, Technical Advisor to the SDI, since 1965.

The Third Edition is based on the 2004 Supplement of the 2001 North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. The manual explains the method developed to calculate the capacity of diaphragms using steel roof decks or composite steel floor decks and the use of the diaphragm load tables. The diaphragm tables have been revised and adapted for ease of use with either the allowable stress design (ASD) or load and resistance factor design (LRFD) methods according to the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. With over 130 pages of diaphragm load tables using welds, screws and other mechanical fasteners, the manual is a comprehensive resource for the design profession. There are 16 example problems for ASD and LRFD design and equations to check fasteners for the combined effect of shear and tension. The I-section beams are assembled from two back-to-back cold-formed steel lipped channels, and the box section beams consist of a cold-formed steel plain channel overlapping a lipped channel. First, four-point bending tests were performed on 30 simply supported specimens having 10 different configurations, and the moment capacities and failure modes of built-up section beams at ultimate loads were investigated. The failure characteristics observed were the interaction of local and distortional buckling of the web and top flange for I-section beams and local buckling of the web and top flange in pure bending for box section beams.

Then, finite element models were developed to simulate the tested specimens and validated against the experimental results in terms of the moment capacities and failure characteristics. Moreover, extensive parametric studies, including section height-to-width ratio and flange width-to-thickness ratio, were conducted with the validated numerical models to identify the key factors influencing built-up section beams. Finally, a simplified calculation method considering the reduction factor of the gross section modulus of the built-up section to predict the flexural moment capacities of cold-formed steel built-up I-section and box section beams was proposed. The content is excellent, but it's terribly written. I cannot read the book without a pencil in hand to make revisions along the way. Although I have only read up to section 2.5, the literary mechanics are not getting any better.

It sends me the impression that the book was rushed to the presses with hardly any consideration given to the most critical step in the writing process: PEER REVIEW AND EDITING. I really cannot believe this book was published as-is.In practice I was given the task of analysing a structure formed with cold-formed steels, doing some research online I found that this book was probably the best starting step, the first chapters focus on in depth theory and explanation in simple terms the effects of these steels and their peculiar shapes in design and construction. Coupled with the AISI code and North American Spec, I was able to replicate analysis results from comnputer analysis software by following the VERY thorough examples given in book. One thing I would change is to have more direct examples to the use of the AISI code; for example, some concrete design books include snippets of the ACI code that highlight what to look for when looking at the code book.Make sure to follow along with the code to make sure the authors are referencing the correct code section and equation. On some pages, there is some very important commentary missing that should be referenced from the code before presenting two different equation; I had to look through the code to make sense of this. There should be an errata put out for these errors. I looked on their website but couldn't find one.I guess since it may be my first time touching topics on steel design.Must have it if you are a structural engineer.
