JBL sound systems are used in some of the world’ s most famous arenas, concer t halls and clubs. In f act, JBL speakers are the premier choice f or toda y’ s hottest tour ing acts and ar tists. Y ou just can’t make a more prof essional choice. This User Guide contains impor tant inf or mation that will help you get the most from y our JBL EON loud- speakers so please tak e a moment to read it and be sure to keep it in a saf e place f or future ref erence. Congratulations and thanks from all of us at JBL Prof essional. Y ou ha ve in v ested in the best por table per- f or mance system a vailab le. Only those items recommended by JBL Prof essional should be used. When using these items, re view all enclosed documentation and carefully f ollow all instructions and saf ety precautions. CA UTION: Suspension of speakers should be done b y qualified persons follo wing saf e rigging standards and practices. Unsafe mounting or o v erhead suspension of any hea vy load can result in ser ious injury and equipment damage.Use a damp rag with a general-purpose household detergent. F or grease and marking tape residue, use a damp cloth with isoprop yl alcohol or mineral spirits and wipe dr y.

Do not use po werful sol v ents lik e acetone, MEK, lacquer thinner or 1,1,1-T r ichloro-ethane (house hold cleaning fluid). Moisture can damage the speaker cone and surround, cause corrosion of electrical contacts, and create an electrical shoc k hazard. Protect your speakers from moisture. A void e xposing the speakers to direct moisture. Any electr ical ly pow ered de vice can produce dangerous shock hazards when wet or e xposed to moisture. K eep speakers out of e xtended or intense direct sunlight such as that encountered in per manent, outdoor installation. The driver suspension will prematurely dry out and finished surfaces will be deg raded by long- ter m e xposure to intense ultra-violet light. Placement Precautions F or Stand Mounting your EON speak ers include a 35mm receptacle cup to facilitate mounting on tripod stands. It ma y be necessar y to place additional weight (e.g. sandbags) on the base of the stand to improv e stability. Floor and T able T op Application The EON10 G2 generates considerab le energy. When placed on a slipper y surf ace such as polished wood or linoleum, the EON10 G2 ma y mov e due to its acoustical energy output. Precautions should be tak en to ensure that the speaker does not f all off a stage or table on which it is placed. One solution is to place the speaker on a rubber mat. Electrical Safety All EON products are fitted with a detachable po wer cord (supplied) which connects to the A C mains and the back panel of the loudspeak er. The power cord has an IEC f emale connector on one end and a male mains connector on the other end. This cord is supplied specifically to accommodate the diff erent world- wide saf ety and electrical code requirements. Depending on the electrical power standards in y our area, the pow er cord ma y hav e a 3-pin type plug. Do not cut off or damage the grounding plug. Lik e any electri- cal appliance, y our EON pow ered speakers should not be used in w ater or when wet. 5 Specifications F req.

Range (-10 dB): 65 Hz - 18 kHz F req. CONTR OLS AND CONNECTIONS The audio section of the EON10 G2 includes pow erful features that enhance the fle xibility of your speak ers. Contr ols INPUT 1 Adjusts the le vel of INPUT 1. Use this control to match the input sensitivity of the EON10 G2 to the output le vel of the mix er, microphone, or instrument connected to INPUT 1. It is a common miscon- ception that this control changes the pow er of a system. Y our EON10 G2 will produce its rated output pow er no matter where this control is set. The INPUT 1 control deter mines ho w much signal is required at the input in order to drive the system to full output. When using a single audio input to the speaker, this is the input to use. See the APPLICA TION EXAMPLES and CABLES AND CONNECT ORS sections of this guide for details on how this input ma y be used. CA UTION: Bef ore adjusting this s witch, be cer tain to rotate the INPUT 1 control fully counter clockwise. Changing the other settings on the audio panel will not eff ect the OUT signal. Any changes to input le vel settings will aff ect the OUT signal. See the APPLICA TION EXAMPLES section f or details on how this mode ma y be used. 9 The threshold f or this light is actually about 2 dB below clipping. An occasional flick er of the red LED on the loudest peaks is acceptable. If this LED remains red f or more than the duration of brief dynamic peaks, the system is being ov erdr iv en.

Continuously ov er dr iving the system will result in unpleasant and f atiguing distor tion and may lead to premature f ailure of your speak er system. V OL T A GE SELECTION AND FUSES Changing V oltage Y our EON10 G2 will typically be set at the f actor y to accommodate the power mains v oltage in your area. Before you set up y our EON10 G2 for the first time it is a good idea to v erify that the setting of the selector is appropr iate f or the power in y our area. Directly abov e the power s witch you will see a seal that indicates the f actor y setting f or the v oltage. If the voltage indicated is correct f or your area, go ahead and pow er up your EON10 G2.F ailure of fuses is most frequently a symptom of problems requiring ser vice b y a competent technician. Again, the left and r ight channels will be combined into mono. The optional tr ipod stands will get the speak ers up abov e the audience so the sound can project. Locate the f eedback frequency and reduce it using the mix er EQ or an e xter nal equalizer. Excessiv e gain.

Reduce the gain at the mix er and mov e the microphone closer to the sound source. The objectiv e of proper gain structure is to minimize noise on one e xtreme and to pre- v ent clipping on the other. Proper gain str ucture will result in all components clipping at about the same time. First, let’ s clear up one common misconception. The input control on an amplifier or powered speak er does not deter- mine how m uch power it will produce. A 100 watt amplifier (f or example) can produce 100 w atts no matter where the input le vel control is set. The input lev el control simply deter mines how much input v oltage is required to dr iv e the amp to full output. If the input lev el controls of an EON10 G2 are set too low (rotated too f ar counter-clockwise) the mix er will go into clipping bef ore the speakers are driven to full output. If the input lev el controls of an EON10 G2 are set too high (rotated too f ar clockwise) the system will be noisy. With that in mind, here’ s a procedure f or setting up system gain structure that will get the best dynamic performance possible from your system. Slowly bring up the INPUT 1 le vel control of the EON10 G2 until the desired perf or mance volume is reached. When used with a typical DJ or audio mix er, this will probably place the control around 10:00 o’clock. Step by step instructions 1. Begin with all lev el controls on your mix er and EON10 G2 speakers at minimum. Note that the EON10 G2 has a s witch that selects “Mic” or “Line” sensitivity. The “Mic” position should be used only when a microphone is connected directly to the input. 2. Br ing the INPUT 1 le v el control on your EON10 G2s to appro ximately 9:00 o’clock. We’ll come bac k and make some final adjustments here later on. 3. Br ing the output of any electronic source (CD pla yer, drum machine, electronic ke yboard, etc.) to its “nominal” position. This will usually be marked.

Be sure that the lev el you’ re pla ying at is the same as the actual perf or mance le v el will be. W atch the channel “Clip” or “Ov er load” or “P eak” indicator. It should just flick er on the v er y loudest dynamic peaks. 5. Now bring the channel fader up to its “nominal” position (see the mix er Owners Manual). 6. Slowly bring the mixer master f aders up to their nominal position. At this point, y ou should hear sound from the EON10 G2s. If you’ re seeing peaks that dr iv e the meters into clipping, trim back the channel f aders and master f aders slightly. Also be aw are that actual performance lev els tend to be higher than rehearsal and sound check le vels so y ou ma y want to trim back the input sensitivity slightly. 9. If an outboard processor such as a graphic EQ is used, it should be set to “unity gain” (see the processor’ s Owners Manual). Unity gain means that the signal le vel on the output is the same as the le vel at the input. 10. Now bring up the input control of your EON10 G2 speak ers until the desired perf or mance v olume is reached. If clipping occurs bef ore the desired volume is reached y ou need more speakers or a lo wer perf or mance v olume. 11. Listen to your mix and adjust to taste. 12. At this point, the maximum output of the mixing console should be capable of driving your EON10 G2s to full out put and you will ha ve the low est noise operation that your equipment is capab le of delivering. 16 Reference Y our EON10 G2 can accept either type of input. Balanced Lines In audio, a balanced line is a three-conductor system in which the two signal wires carr y an equal, but opposite v oltage with respect to the ground wire. The ground wire acts only as a shield and does not carr y an y audio signal current. Balanced connections are preferred f or any longer cab le r uns. Unbalanced Lines Unbalanced cable is a tw o-wire system where the shield (ground wire) acts as one of the current carr ying signal conduc- tors.

The center conductor enclosed by the shield is commonly kno wn as the “hot” conductor. Unbalanced audio cab les do not reject noise as well as balanced lines. Unbalanced lines are typical in home hi-fi type systems and on the outputs of electronic musical instruments. These work well if the distance between the components is shor t, the signal le vel is relativ ely high and all of the electronics used in the system are plugged into the same AC service. Loudspeaker Placement and Mounting The f ollowing guidelines will help y ou achiev e optimum sound where ver y ou use your EON loudspeak ers: Raise the speakers as high as possib le. F or best results tr y to get the high frequency horn at least 2 to 4 feet abo ve the heads of the audience. If the speakers are too lo w, the people in the back of the audience will not receiv e the best quality of sound. Place the speakers betw een the microphones and the audience. Feedbac k occurs when the microphones pick up sound from the speakers and “feed” the sound back through the sound system. If space is limited, point the speakers aw a y from the microphones to reduce f eedback. Locate the speakers a way from turntables. Low-frequency f eedback occurs when the output of the speak er is pick ed up by the tone arm of the tur ntab le and is re-amplified. A hea vy, solid tur ntable base and shoc k mounting can also reduce this type of f eedback in DJ applications. Use more speakers in large or highly re verberant spaces. Spreading speakers throughout these spaces will produce much better sound than trying to compensate with loudness lev el or equalization. F or v er y long distances, the use of another set of speakers on a dela y is recommended. Stand speakers upright f or P A - Tilt the speakers bac k for stage monitoring. Upr ight stance provides e ven cov erage ov er a wide area. EON speakers are also designed with two slanted positions f or stage monitor ing applications.

17 TRS connectors ma y be used f or a single channel of balanced audio or two channels of unbalanced audio. 18 Cables and Connectors Y our JBL W arranty protects the original owner and all subsequent owners so long as: A.)
