Linwood (4L RANCH) LAST MODIFIED. Unlike the earlier members of this product line (the 400, 560, and 570), they came stock with a cooling fan attached to the back panel, feeding into the finals cage (which is a nice touch - 6KD6s don't tolerate getting very hot, too well). When he quit using it, he put it on a shelf in his basement, and there it sat. I had passed on an FTdx-400 a I had picked up uber cheap at another hamfest, to a friend with limited funds (before I got it running - my friend is a retired RF Tech, and is bit by bit restoring that radio, as time and funds allow), the price was right for the '401B, and I wanted another FTdx, so I bought it. The FTdx-401B turned out to be in a bit rougher shape than it was described to be. The radio was gunky and dirty on both the outside and inside (I think the seller was a smoker, and letting the radio sit in a cold, damp basement, didn't help things in the cleanliness department), and I had to spend a fair amount of time cleaning off all of the grunge. It also turned out, that the 6BZ6 IF amplifier for the receiver section was bad, and as a a result, it failed on power up (for the first time).http://tatswindncomen.eklablog.com/cateye-micro-wireless-cycling-computer-manual-a203338858

Normally, this would have been nothing more than an annoyance (hey!, why is the receiver deaf!), but upon replacement of the tube, the '401B still wouldn't do much. My friend whom I'd given the FTdx-400 to, noticed on the schematics for both the '400, and the '401B, that there was a wiring error for the voltage regulator tube (for some strange reason, Yaesu ran voltage feeds to the same common votalge regulator tube input point, instead of one to the input, and one to the output of the voltage regulator). As a result, when the IF Amp.So, I ended up re-wiring the feeds to the voltage regulator tube, and also replacing R48. Once I did these things, receiver worked fine, the transmitter not so fine. The carrier wouldn't null out in SSB mode, necessitating the replacement of the 7360 tube, which is used for the balanced modulator (7360s have no substitute, and so I've stocked up on a few extras). The 6KD6 finals turned out to not be soft, but just plain shot. I picked up a pair of NOS Toshibas at a hamfest, neutralized them in the FTdx-401B, and I was good to go in late 2012. What's it like to use. Well, like any sweep tube rig, don't go bonkers with key-down time, while tuning up. Despite that warning, tune-up is quick and easy to do. Power output is anywhere from 250-300 watts. You could probably eke another 20 or 50 watts out, but it's not a good idea to do so (remember the finals are sweep tubes, that can do without the additional heat that pushing the tubes a bit more, would generate). My '401B doesn't have the CW filter, and I have other rigs that I prefer to use for CW. I get nice audio reports on SSB. The receiver has nice audio, decent sensitivity for HF use, and has a low amount of internally generated noise, compared to some of my more modern radios. In general, it's a nice radio.

No, it won't keep up with today's latest and greatest top radios, and it would not be my first choice for contesting, but it more than holds it's own (in my opinion) with modern radios for casual operating. It's easy to operate (as long as you remember how to properly tune up a sweep tube final rig), and makes a nice conversation piece for ragchews. Despite the hassles I had with getting mine working right, it has become my favorite casual operating rig. The receive audio sounds great - it sounds warmer to me, than that it does for my solid state rigs. The extra power it puts out, (barefoot, compared to most modern rigs), has come in handy when conditions are bit less than optimum on the bands.Presently restoring the radio with better tubes. Radio was in excellent condition, and was never modified. Finding information on the Yaesu FT-DX401 Series radios (operational and service manuals) was difficult and time consuming, but now have lots of great information. All (20) tubes can generally be easily found, mainly from tube warehouses or at ham fests. June 04, 2011 update: By purchasing some used good tubes, radio now puts out 240 Watts power easily. Sound quality is quite good. Have had many good transmission reports. Even though I have a modern HF radio, I really enjoy these old tube radios. Daily use by a variety of operators without a problem. That included annual field day excursions and many contests. Once a year we would take off the cover and carefully shake out the mouse poop that had accumulated inside (thanks to sharing the building with the Agriculture Club). Otherwise, no maintenance at all. Obviously this is dated technology. But, like many fine rigs from the 70's, it proved itself. Nice anti-backlash tuning, and a nice receiver. Of course they put out a lot of heat.they're full of tubes, but one a fall or winter day, that's a feature not a bug. Sturdy fun and very attractive. Generated lots of heat, power, gave a nice signal out on CW.

However it had problems with dirty relays, high voltage (around 60 volts) on the key (drove some solid state keyers nus), and the 6KD6 sweep tubes were way over taxed (even with the big fan on it). I always thought this radio was designed for the sole purpose of Yaesu using up some surplus tubes they had in the back room. Just an OK radio in it's day, I should have purchased a Kenwood TS-520 instead. Marker generator has 100kHz and 25kHz. Output is high, with 560W PEP input. VFO is stable. Final cooling fan is noisey. Clarifier is strange, in that all the way to the left is 'off', with centre being '0'. Mine has an AGV fault (another part of the circuit that isn't in the manual) but I will track it down. Contact the site with comments or questions. The only major drawback was that the relay would get dirty contacts that caused the radio to fail both transmit and receive.Looking at restoring the unit over the next year. Radio was in excellent condition, and showed no visible internal signs of any modifications. Finding information on the Yaesu 400 Series radios (operational and service manuals) was time consuming, but have them now. All (20) tubes can be easily found now from many tube warehouses available on the internet. I'll update this in the future. I bought mine in 1976 and a Kenwood TS-520 would have been a better buy. With 560 W PEP input, 50% efficency, over 200 watts in heat.If I recall correctly only the VFO was solid state. It had something like 26 tubes in it (TS-520 had 3). 4) No built in speaker. I added one to mine.Getting one of these working right is a worthwhile activity. Have received good comments on TX audio as well. Finding and collecting the accesories is fun and a challenge.

Shack starts getting big when one starts adding the accesories (FTV 650, FV-401, matching speakers and a fldx2000 amp) Up to that time I had been using separate transmitters and receivers. Moving up to a transceiver like the 401B was fantastic. I still own my Ft-401B line. I have mainly used it on 40 and 20 meters with some operation on 15. The entire line is in mint condition. Having moved to a new house with some antenna space I have slung a wire and got out the old FTDX401 complete with the cellophane covering on the front panel. The receiver still operates as good as ever, but there is no cathode current when switched to transmit. Luckily I have kept the original handbook and all the schematics and test data I compiled in those early years. It's probably just a sticky relay, but I have a complete set of valves (tubes to our friends in the west), so hope to get it up and running again before too long. I'll have to keep the power down for early testing (400W PEP with bad modulation could be embarrassing). However, the reality is that the FTDX401 will have to become part of the furniture and I will have to buy a modern rig (why have we got to have separate power supplies?).I am busy reading all the reviews. Great Web Site 73's Eric G4FMZ I can recall going to the radio store back in early 70s and wanting the FTDX560.Great looking radio to me back then.but my number 2 wife didn't like the look in my eye. After 30 years I got rid of number 2 and now have the 560 and a few others. Most can still be had at good prices but I missed out on a FLDX-2000.next time.73s Bob They hit the continent in the late 60's when Collins, Hallicrafters etc.Unlike the SWANS, Heathkits, Drake etc., which had external power supplies (for the most part), Yaesu produced these rigs with self-contained supplies. There all tubes except for the transistor VFO, Calibrator and Solid State rectifiers. The tubes are all common and can be found on 'ebay' for example.

I would not suggest these series of rigs as a main station, today most would want some form of Solid State rig, digital read out etc., but if one is interested in radios of yester- year, these mostly rare models are a lot of fun to operate. The operation is good. The receivers are nosier than my DSP rig but I have worked some pretty weak stations. At least twice as much as today radios. You're right, thats only 3db, but it will drive the paints off an amplifier. I have received excellent reports, strength and audio (using a Sure 444). The rigs are all metal, no plastic and when in good shape, there beautiful even at night in the shack. The number 47 bulbs burn brightly from the two windows, when you bring your hand up to tune the radio the light reflects off your fingers on to the calibrated dial to tell what frequency your on. Of course in the winter your rig will keep your coffee warm. The 400 has no fans, I use a muffin fan on top with four rubber feet and a veriac to control the speed. The later models have fans mounted by the finals. I own a 400 and 401B and really enjoy getting them on the air, most folks I talk to don't even know what they are.The finals are a pair of 6KD6 sweep tubes. Selectivity is 2.3Khz at -6db using a mechanical filter (not Collins). Functions include VOX, RIT, semi break-in with CW sidetone, 25 and 100hz calibrators, VFO or four xtal controlled positions. This is a large heavy radio weighing about 50 lbs. The exterior appears to be a cast aluminum front panel and trim with a steel case and removable top cover. The underside of the interior chassis is full of various parts. Looks disorganized, must have been a difficult production item requiring a lot of discipline. After my radio broke, I decided to pass it on to RTO for repair. To their credit, RTO fixed the radio. I have known others to breakdowm as well. The 6BM8 audio output tube among others operates very hot. I installed some tube coolers in this radio.

The receiver is sensitive and selective. The 25khz calibrator is handy. The outer ring of the tuning knob includes a scale that can be rotated for calibrated readout while holding the knob in place. The radio will output up to 300 watts PEP. The final section looks like half of a sweep tube amp common a few years ago. The power transformer is large thus up to the task. I believe the FT-101 series are better radios, but this radio has a much better exterior appearance. I can not state this is a poor performer, but would rather have other radios such as Drake, some National or even pc board Heathkits. An article from Electric Radio magazine goes into much more detail than I. The article may be the only SSB, non US manufacture radio allowed in Barrys' publication. This radio simply looks impressive and almost imposing like a IC-765. Good signal reports. Very nice looking radio. Uses a pair of 6KD6 finals. However I have a question about the two AUX bands that can be installed.Kind regards DaveI can see this one has had top band put into it, it has a 7.5295 Xtal in the Aux 2 position and extra loading variable capacitor added. I don't have that much interest in top band, there are some interesting QSO's on there but the amount of QRM makes them a task to listen to. 17M and 12M may be more interesting and should certainly more efficient use of the radio. While on the subject of Xtals, are they all the same, by this I mean is the physical size of a Xtal important.? I can see I have the option on the S1b wavechange switch of fundamental or frequency doubler output from the oscillator. Any more feedback would be more than welcome from you fine gentlemen. 73 AndrewThey?re fine if your expectations are realistic. That said, modern transceivers with solid state PAs and inbuilt automatic ATUs which progressively lower the output if the antenna is mismatched, won?t do any better. The questionable maximum output of the rig is still a source of controversy. There were rumours at the time that the valves were becoming scarce and expensive, but I've just checked out of curiosity in a google search, which turned up scores of them, many NIB, at sensible prices. Hope the rig gives you many hours of enjoyment Andrew.

Jolly good rig and you could hang all sorts of extras such as a second VFO, a 6m transverter (Tuned to 4m) etc. Whilst living in VS6 I saw the result of over estimating the output capability on RTTY at the station of VS6EK. The glass envelopes of both 6KD6s' had melted and imploded. I believe that not all brands of 6KD6 will work in the '401. IIRC, Toshiba were best but some GE ones that I bought in the USA were not much cop as a transmitting valve. Bit OT though.I am wondering if it would be worth the effort to get a pair of 6146's and set up the finals for them (unless they are rare as well). They really didn't like continuous-carrier stuff like RTTY though. These could really brutally end-stop the anode current meter when driven with SSB and 'military voice quality' speech-processing.They also tend to be large. Perhaps the best bet is a lucky find of LOP valves in a shop clear-out.They are going to use different bases, not pin compatible, and different electrical characteristics requiring changes in the neutralising circuits and elsewhere. The FTDX401 was a fairly unique rig in its day with its relative high output power compared with the likes of the FT101. And was it also one of the rigs which uses the 7360, also now unobtanium. If it produces power at all, live with it. And if it is feasible to add the WARC bands in the aux positions even better. 73 Dave G3YMCOver the top? Probably, but better to let the 572Bs take the strain, especially on RTTY. Oddly enough, I came across a 7360 in one of my valve boxes the other day. Interesting and unique valve and capable of a very good carrier suppression figure. I bought one several months ago that was in pretty bad shape. Parts missing, parts added, parts bad, whacked out alignment. The AM circuit is a bolt in; actually an afterthought for this rig. Looks like Yaesu was really chasing their tail with this model. It runs down to RL-2 and is tied in with 3 other wires of the same color all solder blobbed together.

I can manually drive it zero state with a jumper wire to ground and tx is present as it should be with PTT energized. I really need a complete manual with a good schematic if anyone has a copy to spare for a little while. It also has S meter issues as well as no power out on slopbucket (not immediately worried about that). This appears to be an actual FT-401B with a low serial number, so all this may not necessarily be factory add on. 73, Phil I will check this weekend and if I do I will send you a good scan of the schematic. However, these were made during the era that Yaesu schematics and manuals were authored by the Japanese cousin of the 1940's Hallicrafters technical writer. There are so many sub boards tacked onto the bottom main board and attached in a very fragile manner. I think I may have to do some unlooming of the harness to figure out the relay wiring because I'm scared to do any heavy tugging on the wires loomed up to figure out how they're ran. If I'm understanding what info I've found so far, did the first 401B's have AM receive only. If that is the case, maybe I have one that someone may have tried to install a factory add-on kit for AM tx. The board containing the 3850 Mc oscillator and AM modulator is mounted above the meter with a small metal bracket. If so, the way it is now, I'd say they never got it to work. I appreciate the help Rodger. I figure if I hadn't bought it, the fellow who had it would have probably just parted it out or scrapped it altogether. Hate to see somthing that can be fixed up nice to end up like that. 73, PhilEverything is working now, even slopbuckety outpoot. Still have to retension some tube socket contacts, replace a handful of electrolytics about as old as I am, blow back through the complete alignment, and all should be good. Everything except for that squished up sounding AM rx.Heard a lot of guys from the SW this weekend; KX5JT, KE7TRP, everyone up in New England. I'd say receive alignment is pretty close on 80M.

Well, time to get the soldering iron hot! Phil.
