I have an ancient Sony Trinitron TV, very heavy and all wood and chrome and black, from 1967. When the digital switchover happened, I got a Freeview for older TV's without the SCART connector, mine has only the aerial in socket. This Freeview died, so I looked for another, and the GDR11 came up. It's no longer made new, but is easy to set up and use. It's better than the old one was. You can also use it with a SCART TV or VCR, and if you want stereo sound, hook up a pair of amplified speakers to the RCA sound sockets on the back of it. Nice little Freeview for those who keep an old vintage telly, or enthusiasts that do. Sometimes the capacitors go on the power supply, but repair's easy if you know what to do. One last and very useful feature is that the RF output can be changed, should ano ther TV station or device make interference. This is on the easy to use MENU, on the remote. The twin scart freeview box is identical to my old one, and is easy to use and set up. Cancel Thanks, we'll look into this. All Rights Reserved. Before the analogue signal was switched off I could record any freview digital channel while watching a different channel with the TV's analogue tuner. After digital switchover, I wanted to be able to do the same so I searched reviews of set-top boxes. I didn't need an HD set-top box for my old TV and when I finally buy a new TV it will have a digital tuner. The GDR11 is small and smart-looking. It has two scart sockets and comes with a scart cable and an RF cable. It was very easy to set up. The quick-start guide and detailed user guide are very clear and easy to follow - Crystal Mark approved by the Plain English Campaign. The remote is straightforward, well-designed and comfortable to hold. The programme guide is fine, giving now and next immediately but 7-day information after a longer wait. A very clear and simple guide: 'How to set up your universal remote control' was included for programming the remote to operate many different makes of TV also. One reviewer commented on a suspected malfunction - going into standby by itself. Another reviewer helfully stated that this is an 'auto-standby' feature that can be turned off as described on page 71 of the user guide. This information is correct. Summary: an excellent product and very good value for money. It comes well-packed and with a truly understandable set of instructions in clear English. I have an old TV which I believed was ready for the scrap heap before the switch-over, but picture and sound are now crystal clear. The box is easy to set up for an amateur like me, and comes supplied with everything you need including batteries for the remote.</p><p> There is a scart cable for relatively modern TVs and an RF cable for the sets that don't even have that. As soon as the box is plugged in, tuning is automatic and takes seconds. The remote control is well-designed, comfortable to hold and easy to understand. It has a home button which takes you direct to BBC 1 and then a toggle button to the other channels. None of it complicated. The on-screen programme guide is quite adequate, giving now and next day immediately with 7-day information after a longer wait. You can, if you wish, reprogramme this remote control to include your TV as well. All in all a lovely, well-made product, suitable for any non-digital TV and still working perfectly two years later. Includes parental control lock and subtitle buttons which are easy to find and use. Includes an automatic 'stand-by' function which kicks in after three hours if you've changed nothing. Very useful if you have a family member who falls asleep in front of the TV, but can be switched off. The box, instructions and especially the remote are suitable for the visually impaired and the audio-describer facility, which adds comments such as 'she munches an apple' is awesome.I'm hopeless with anything technical, but, honestly, this was idiot-proof!! I had arranged with a TV engineer to come on Saturday, but since I received the box in record time, was loath to wait another two days without TV!:-) I didn't need to cos the instructions were brilliantly clear. AND - icing on the cake - this box comes with a universal remote control. I simply needed to enter the code for my make of TV from the list in the manual and BINGO!! It works for both TV and set-top box. Only a few days ago I thought I had to buy a new TV. This marvel has saved me a fortune!!Unless you are recording on a DVD the second socket is useless. The main unit is good, easy to set up and I took the auto standby off but left it otherwise.</p><p> The unit seems to handle the Indoor aerial signal better than the previous by a lot and the picture is first rate and I live in a difficult area for signals. Apart from the misleading Scart for DVD claim I have no objections and it works well. What I will have to do with the DVD now is buy a Scart to UHF Modulation and a co-axal splitter and tune it to a different channel but it wont work with this unit unless the DVD is a recorder and then it wont play back without the UHF modulator. For its price I was expecting a cheap looking, flimsy box that would move every time some one walked into the room. How mistaken was I! It is light weight but very sturdy and stays put and not cheap looking at all. Once set up, which was very easy to do, it started to auto tune buy just one press of the button. The menu and setting up couldnt be easier. It even managed to add a couple more channels which Ive not had with the old top box. I use mine in the bedroom on a very old portable TV and the picture quality is excellent. Would certainly recommend this to any one who is thinking of getting a 'top box'.
