Albert 5.0 out of 5 stars We did save the old thermostat based on some of the reviews about this thermostat dying after a year or two. The installation instructions included in the box are very clear. The screws from our old thermostat's wall plate fit this one so that part was a breeze. We have a single stage set-up and our old thermostat had 5 wires so that's how we installed the new one. We did shut off the power before starting, which is highly recommended.
It took two of us to install it but that's because we shut the power off and the light in the hallway was one of the things that needed to be shut off to totally power down our furnace - one person held the flashlight and spare screwdriver while the other person did the installation.The default set-ups are useful and we didn't change the majority of those. We tested the system fully, both heat and cool and it worked. Programming it is pretty easy as well. My husband and I have allergies so we have an electronic filter, and the fan needs to run to clear the air; and (2) auto switch between heating and cooling though we decided not to use that after some thought. What I found I really like about this thermostat is that you don't have to program all four cycles; the installer mode allows you to simply use wake and sleep if you want. This makes it a lot simpler for us. You can also check off all seven days and make them all the same (vs having to go through each one, or do weekends separately from weekdays.) Again, a simplification when it comes time to set or change the program. If I have a gripe about this particular model, it is that the whole front of the thermostat has to be removed in order to change the batteries, which is recommended once a year. It's kind of nerve-racking to put the front back on because you have to line up the pins to the wall plate exactly and we were nervous that we weren't getting it right, and would end up damaging the thermostat. We will post an update if the thermostat fails unexpectedly.But for a 7 day programmable thermostat with 4 times per day, it's really a 'set it and forget it' sort of device. When I go to work, the house temperature floats. Before I come home, the thermostat brings the temperature back into my desired range. It saves money on the electric bill, and works great. The initial setup is a little complex, but if you have a medium clue about HVAC it's not that bad.
This unit is designed for a professional to do the install so the directions are pretty terse. There are tons of helpful websites with tips on setup for those folks who need expanded instructions. If you're not sure which end of a screwdriver to hold, you might want to have a pro or an experienced friend help with the install. Really, the only time I touch the thermostat is when I have a day off and have to manually set the temperature back to my comfortable range. And that's the way it should be.It's a pretty thermostat. I'm still experimenting with the setup and will update this review after I've used the unit for some time. I have had to adjust the thermostat calibration -1 degree, but nothing else out of the ordinary. The granularity for making schedules is really good. This, however, doesn't bother me in the slightest. My running AC is louder. This unit has no WIFI. I do like the ability to keep the backlight on at all times.No issues with it in four years. This replaced a non-programmable and was a big step up from anything I've had before. I also picked up the outdoor temperature sensor. The user side of things is simple. If you can program your VCR, you're fine. I did go through the installer setup at install with my dad present, trying to learn a few things if my day job doesn't work out.:) I wouldn't have had a clue what some of the settings meant without my dad (or google) to explain them. As other reviews have stated, Honeywell highly recommends a pro install for this unit, and may not properly honor the warranty without that. I understand, but disapprove of the practice. That said, if you're so inclined or have someone in the know who can install this, you're only taking the chance that it might fail in the warranty period, and Honeywell stuff is pretty solid. I've seen electronic Honeywell thermostats dating back two decades still humming along just fine. If you're wondering, yes the thermostat does click when the equipment is turned on and off.
While the click isn't annoying, it is audible from several feet away. Go freaking figure. Basically the left half of the screen no longer responds to touch. As expected, Honeywell won't honor the warranty without going through the original contractor, who doesn't exist. I knew this going in so like I said in my original review, if you're at all concerned about RMA'ing the thing for a failure over the 5 year period, buy it from an HVAC distributor (which should be able to assist you file a warranty claim) and NOT Amazon directly. Do not buy this without understanding that Honeywell is protecting the distribution channel, since this thermostat is meant to be sold by an HVAC contractor who sells and installs it. Do I like it, not one bit, but it's the risk you take doing it yourself if you want to save some dough on installation.
